<blockquote><p>I have been trying to take care of some abandoned cats and kittens myself here where live. I live in a townhouse like apartment on the lake. I have two grown cats, but have had many over the years & gone though so much, I almost feel like a pro about cats.</p>
<p><img style=float:left;margin:2px;" src="http://www.tantalizingstitches.com/wp-content/uploads/expressions.jpg" />People keep getting all of these pets that they can't keep or don't want after. Problem is, I can't save them all. I took a little female calico in recently and she fits right in, but I'm not supposed to have this many, even here.</p>
<p>Now I've ended up feeding five abandoned cats outside and I actually can't afford it. I can't get in touch with anyone to help, then catching them is another story and I'm not physically able to do that. It breaks my heart when this happens. People have no second thoughts about putting a cat or kitten out and figure it will do what comes naturally. But some of these cats don't know what to do and that is sad. </p>
<p>But I am glad to be part of a group that helps some of these poor babies. </p></blockquote>

While humans have the capacity to release heat by sweating, these animal's primary mechanism is by panting, a less effective method. Because of this, please take extra precaution during these northern hemispheric <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_Days">dog days</a> of summer.</p>
<p>Some tips that I have gathered from online resources include:
<ul><li>Provide water and shade to your outdoor pet (concrete ground makes it especially hot);</li>
<li>Whether you think its cool outside, do not leave your pet in the car;</li>
<li>Pay special attention to short muzzle breeds as their flat faces make panting even less effective in releasing heat;</li>
<li>More signs are available <a href="http://www.doctordog.com/dogbook/dogheat.html">here</a> and <a href="http://www.pets.ca/articles/article-heatstroke.htm">here</a>.</li>
</ul></p>
<p>If you suspect that your pet is experiencing heat stroke, immediately attempt to cool down your pet (hose your pet with water, place wet towels on head, neck, feet, chest, abdomen), check your pet's temperature every five minutes (normal body temperature is around 38.5-39.5C / 101-103F), and immediately take your pet to your trust vetrinarian.</p>
<p><b>Even if you have controled your pet's heat stroke, make sure to bring him/her to the vet as complications could occur days later.</b></p>

<p>Its August and this month's initiative is to get our members to our Facebook page. I know many of you are on our group page but due to the FB group limitations we are transitioning to a FB fan page. <p>Once you've joined please leave a message on the FB fan page wall. And, if I have never received your Artfire window, please email it to me at el@tantalizingstitches.com. I am trying to get those that participate in the initiative some window time on our blog :)</p>
<p>Just as a reminder, each of these initiatives will be repeated beginning in January so don't feel like you have to wait until the requirements are set in place.</p>

I personally had no clue because the first dog that ever owned me used to howl at each and every splash of fireworks. Anna would just sit on the porch, point her noise up and howl after each of them.</p>
<p>I don't know what Anna's interest in fireworks really was but I know many dogs are easily spooked by the blaring sound of fireworks. I you are close enough to the event you can feel the ground shake. Imagine what these animals - with such great sense of sound and vibration are feeling.</p>

<img style="width:150px;float:left;margin:5px;" src="http://www.tantalizingstitches.com/wp-content/uploads/wed.jpg" /><p>June 5 is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Environment_Day">World Environment Day</a> in the northern hemisphere: its a day to celebrate the beginning of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. This year's theme is: Many Species. One Planet. One Future. Its devoted to the biodiversity of the planet and will be hosted in Kigali, Rwanda.</p>
<p>Since the environment is key to the health and welfare of animals I urge everyone to do something special to reduce your impact on the environment. It is as easy as taking public transportation for a day or take your dog out for a very long walk. If you haven't started already, start a recycling regimen at your house separating cans, plastics, etc. so you can easily recycle your trash.</p>

<p>After much thought and after conversing with other guildmasters, I have decided to add time-manageable tasks to our CFA members. I originally opened the guild to bring together crafty animal lovers together to help both animals and to promote members. However, without help from all members, nothing much can occur. Our guild has been open for about a year and a half so I think it is time to get a move on it.</p>
<p>Simple, <b>ten minute tasks every month</b> will help our guild tremendously. Such things as welcoming new members and providing them with information on how to find CFA on the internet, posting on our facebook page, administering our flickr group, writing a blog entry, and various other things take a moments time and will help promote our group and CFA members.</p>
<p>To give you guys some time to transition into this process, I have given until January 2011 (next year) to implement this. This will also allow you to determine what exactly you would like to do. Be the first to volunteer and you can choose from a number of activities. Be the last and there will be less to choose from. (And, of course, if you have a new idea feel free to suggest it.)</p>
<p>I suggest all (especially those who have concerns or suggestions) to post them in our new <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/cfa-guild">google group</a>.</p>

<a href="http://www.berkeleyhumane.org/"><img style="float:left;margin:5px;" src="http://www.tantalizingstitches.com/wp-content/uploads/BEBHS_Logo.jpg" /></a><p>A fire hit the BEBHS shelter hard at the end of May resulting in the loss of life of many adoptable cats and the destruction of the cat adoption area. In rebuilding, BEBHS needs both manpower and funds. If you live in the Bay Area in California, they would love <b>volunteers for foster care and shelter help</b>. For many of us who are far away, the only possible way to help is to <b>spread the word</b> or by <b>donating funds</b>. I alot 5% of my sales to animal charity. While I have a regular charity I usually donate to I have decided to donate this portion from my May and June sales to BEBHS.</p>
<p>BEBHS is very active online and contacted me after I told them about what I was doing. You too may also want to do the same. You can read more about BEBHS at their <a href="http://www.berkeleyhumane.org/">website</a> and their special <a href="http://rebuildberkeleyhumane.org/">rebuilding website</a> where they list stores that are assisting them in their reconstruction.</p>

<p>In the Northern Hemisphere, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Day">Earth Day</a> is April 22 - today! (October 22 is Earth Day in the Southern Hemisphere.) What are you doing to celebrate? If you don't yet have plans, there is still time to make a difference. You can write a blog post about Earth Day, send a newsletter informing other people about Earth Day. Here are some things people have said they are planning to do to celebrate Earth Day:

<p>To get new members integrated into our guild, I need one person to volunteer to send a welcome message to new members. All you have to do is visit the guild hall once a week and check to see who the new members are. Then, send them a message (form message if you prefer) to them letting them know about our blog, flickr, facebook page, etc. Without this, new members will not be able to find there way through the guild. <br />

<p>Hi All!</p>
<p>Sorry for the delay! This new year has been really exciting for me in terms of expansion of my online business and my personal life and that has caused a delay in this month's newsletter.</p>
<p>I hope your new year has been full of new ideas and animal happiness. Please let me know what animal activities and selling techniques you have been up to so we can share with our fellow members. Also, if you have any new year's resolutions, please share how you plan to meet your new goals!</p>
<p><strong><u>I really need a volunteer to help me manage new members.</u></strong> This basically means adding new members to our newsletter and if possible, adding new members to our flickr group and sending the new member list to our other volunteers who update our other forums.</p>
<p>I wanted to remind everyone about our joint collaboration with the Artfire Friends Guild: You Can Sell It ran by one of our members, Tammy of cutsiepoochie (she has recently changed her shop name but I do not know the exact username. sorry!) Its a theme based contest and this month's theme is Winter Wonderland. If you haven't contacted her about your interest do so now (as she may take you after the initial deadline).</p>

</span>Everyone will create a piece of work based on a theme. This month\'s theme will be "Winter Wonderland."<br/>
<br/>
The most original/outstanding piece of work would be voted for using a poll widget on various blogs, chatterbox, studios, etc.<br/>
<br/>
The winner for the theme would then be given an award widget. The widget can be posted on your Artfire shop and you can then claim you have an award-winning piece of work in your studio. I know that some items are not produced within mere seconds, and that those of us that have more "demanding" items may be a little hesitant to participate. However, even those that crochet or have intense items could come up with something "small". I crochet thread items and sometimes they can take just a few hours to complete. So be creative - it's a creativity contest. Think about going outside of your "normal" areas and discovering a talent you've hidden.<br/>

<span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 51, 204);">3. HOW TO WIN</span><br/>
</span>To make it more fun, all of the work will be anonymous until a winner is chosen. Participants may vote in the contest. Voting for yourself or another participant is fully your decision, but please keep it fair.<br/>

The voting will take place the week of <span style="font-weight: bold;">January 25-31, 2010</span>.<br/>

</span>The winner will be announced on <span style="font-weight: bold;">February 1st</span>.<br/>

<div>The Etsy Item Importer feature allows you to import all or a select number of items from your etsy shop. I have used this feature to import some of my crocheted purses and greeting cards into my artfire store and found it very fast and convenient. Remember to edit your item once you import - pay special attention to the categories and tags. Also, I noticed that it automatically converts any text that says "etsy" to "artfire," which is not always so useful. Also remember to edit any portion of your description to reflect your artfire store.

You can choose to edit all your items, items in certain categories, or an individual item. Then, you can edit item prices, item shipping, item category placement, item studio category placement, item primary color, item search filters, item tags, and item promo boxes. You can also reduce the prices of these items by a certain amount or percent.
